The Library of Things

A fictional community project, written for this practice paper.

On a rainy Saturday in the town of Riverton, a queue forms outside an old railway station. People are not waiting for a train; they are waiting to borrow a camping tent, a cake tin or an electric drill. The building belongs to the town’s Library of Things, a community project that lends useful objects instead of books.

The project began three years ago when a group of residents noticed that many households owned tools and appliances they used only once or twice a year. Renting such items was expensive, while buying them created waste. The group asked the local council for permission to use the empty station building and received a small grant to buy its first collection.

Today the shelves hold more than 400 objects. Before anything is lent, trained volunteers check that it is clean and safe to use. Members pay a small annual fee and can reserve an item online. Borrowing is usually free, although expensive equipment requires a refundable deposit.

The most popular items include sewing machines, camping equipment and power tools. One member, Hana, says she borrowed a sewing machine to repair her children’s clothes. “I saved money and learned a new skill,” she explains. “I also met two neighbours who now join a monthly repair workshop.”

However, the project faces challenges. Storage space is limited, and items such as kettles are sometimes returned late. Some repairs are too expensive for volunteers to complete. The organisers are therefore asking local businesses for spare parts and looking for a larger building.

Supporters believe the library offers more than practical help. By sharing resources, residents reduce waste, build friendships and discover skills they did not know they had.
